CA 19-9 test – a method to detect a specific antigen produced by gastrointestinal epithelial cells. High concentrations may indicate malignant growths in GI tissues.

General Information

The CA 19-9 test is part of assessments for suspected GI cancers (stomach, bile ducts, ovaries, liver, etc.). Elevated levels may also indicate cirrhosis, gallstones, hepatitis, or pancreatitis. Lacking high sensitivity and specificity, it’s recommended alongside tests for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), CA 242, CA 72-4, and total bilirubin.

It’s most effective for pancreatic cancer detection, with elevated levels in 70% of such patients. Normal blood levels in healthy individuals are 10 U/mL, so any excess warrants further investigation.

At 1000 U/mL, only 5% of tumors are operable; below this, recovery odds are 50%.

Postoperative antigen increase within 1-7 months signals potential recurrence.

Indications for CA 19-9 Testing

Testing is ordered for signs of pancreatic or GI cancer:

  • Abdominal pain;
  • Frequent nausea/vomiting;
  • Rapid weight loss.

Data aids additional disease diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and recurrence risk assessment.

How Is the CA 19-9 Test Conducted?

Venous blood is drawn mornings, avoiding physical/emotional stress. No food 8-10 hours prior; no alcohol or smoking. Inform the oncologist of any concurrent treatments.

Completion Time for CA 19-9 Testing

Blood sample analysis takes one business day.
