What Is Cytological Investigation of Cervical Biomaterial?

This involves collecting mixed epidermis from the cervical canal and vaginal/supravaginal surfaces. It assesses cytoplasmic maturation.

Proper sampling accurately detects affected tissues in the vaginal/supravaginal areas and identifies precancerous conditions (dysplasia, intraepithelial neoplasia), with 80–96% effectiveness.

Indications for Cytological Investigation of Cervical Biomaterial

Testing is recommended every three years.

Every 2–3 years from ages 30–65; annually if HPV is present, post-transplantation, chemotherapy, or long-term steroid use.

Regular testing is advised.

How Cytological Investigation of Cervical Biomaterial Is Conducted

A special brush collects the sample to avoid contamination, transferring it quickly without drying and fixing it in 96% ethyl alcohol. Morphological characteristics are then evaluated in stages.

For girls under 16, sampling requires parental consent and presence. It’s prohibited after 22 weeks of pregnancy due to potential complications.

Key points:

  • Sampling occurs no earlier than day 5 of the menstrual cycle and no later than 5 days before the next cycle.
  • Avoid testing within 24 hours post-intercourse.
  • Do not test if lubricants, vinegar, Lugol’s solution, tampons, spermicides, vaginal medications, suppositories, creams, or ultrasound gel were used.
  • For acute infections, obtain a sample to identify causative agents, followed by a control test within two months post-treatment.
  • A negative result with altered cervical tissue requires retesting.

Risk groups for cancer include those with HPV, smokers, and individuals with chlamydia, hepatitis, chronic gynecological inflammation, or prolonged contraceptive use.

Young women with early sexual activity or frequent partner changes should not skip tests that could save their lives.

Test classifications (5 classes):

  • Inflammatory process;
  • Possible single-cell changes with altered nucleus-cytoplasm ratios (requires repeat cytology or histology);
  • No atypical cells;
  • Rare malignant components with enlarged nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm;
  • Numerous atypical cells.

Completion Time

Results take 5–10 days, depending on the clinic.
