In modern medicine, there are two types of the disease.

  • Insulin-dependent - occurs in young people who are not obese.
  • Insulin-independent - occurs at the age of 40 and older in people who have problems with excess weight.

The main culprit in the appearance of the disease is considered to be a failure of the immune system. In this case, the functions of the pancreas are disrupted and antibodies are produced that destroy its cells.

The main factors causing the disease.

  • Viral infections. For example, mumps, hepatitis.
  • Overweight. According to statistics, with obesity, the risk increases 10 times.
  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Exposure to certain drugs and chemicals.
  • Hormonal imbalance (acromegaly, pheochromocytosis).
  • Pathologies of the pancreas (tumors, pancreatitis).

Symptoms of the disease vary depending on the nature of the damage to the internal organs. The main warning signs of the body are:

  • dry mouth and thirst;
  • increased fatigue;
  • sharp weight change (both weight loss and weight gain);
  • frequent urination;
  • poor wound healing;
  • drowsiness.

If you find such symptoms, you should immediately seek advice from a medical institution.

The disease can be diagnosed using laboratory tests. Endocrinologists determine the type of malaise by:

  • blood and urine tests for glucose, ketone bodies;
  • types of C-pendin and insulin;
  • fasting glucose tolerance;
  • the presence of glycosylated hemoglobin.
It is important to remember that examinations should be carried out periodically to determine changes in the course of the malaise and prevent serious complications. In this case, it is advisable to visit not only a specialized specialist, but also an ophthalmologist, neurologist, vascular surgeon, cardiologist.

Diabetes treatment is lifelong. It is impossible to completely get rid of the disease. There are several stages in therapy.

  • Diet. It is necessary to exclude foods containing sugar and animal fats from the patient's diet. You will have to give up traditional sweets and switch to sugar substitutes (xylitol, fructose, aspartame, etc.).
  • Insulin therapy. Constant monitoring of blood glucose is required. If there is a deviation from the norm, syringe pens are used.
  • Taking medications that lower glucose levels. These are Maninil, Amaril, Siofor, Glucophage, Diabeton. Such therapy has a number of side effects (skin rash, liver failure, itching, metallic taste in the mouth).

Prevention of the disorder should be started as early as possible. People at risk need to closely monitor their health.

  • Maintaining water balance is important for preventing the disease. To do this, it would not be superfluous to drink 2 glasses of still water in the morning and before meals. It is advisable to reduce the consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol, and soda as much as possible. They harm the cells of the liver and pancreas.
  • Physical exercises and therapeutic gymnastics will help you forget about many troubles. 15-20 minutes of exercise a day will help you lose weight and reduce the likelihood of diabetes.
  • Emotional calm. Normal functioning of the nervous system is the key to a person's balanced tone. This can be achieved through autogenic training or yoga.
